While July 17 and 18 provides a rare off-weekend from the busy NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule, that has not prevented Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne from making plans to don their helmets and get behind the wheel of a race car. The duo, both with Sprint Cup wins already under their belt this year, will return to their roots as open-wheeled winged Sprint Car drivers and participate in Eldora Speedway’s prestigious Kings Royal weekend.

Tony Stewart saw another potential NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon get washed away when rain cut short the Lenox Industrial Tools 301 for a second straight year. The driver of the No. 14 Old Spice/Office Depot Chevrolet Impala SS for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) led once for 40 laps in Sunday’s race and appeared ready to score his third Sprint Cup win at New Hampshire. Instead, Stewart had to settle for his 11th top-five finish in 21 career starts at the 1.058-mile oval when rain cut the race 28 laps short of its scheduled 301-lap distance.

As one of the original Sprint Car traditions, Eldora Speedway’s annual Kings Royal weekend is shaping up to be another activity-filled affair which will be capped off by the July 18 time-honored crowning of the $50,000 King of winged Sprint Car racing with a trip to the hallowed throne.
