Severe weather canceled today’s qualifying session for the Aaron’s 499 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway. As a result, the 43-car field for Sunday’s 188-lap event was set by current car owner points per the NASCAR rulebook.
Tony Stewart, driver of the No. 14 Old Spice/Office Depot “Matterhorn” Chevrolet Impala for Stewart-Haas Racing, will start 13th. Teammate Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 39 Haas Automation/Office Depot Chevrolet, will start 16th.
Stewart won a Sprint Cup race at Talladega in October 2008 while Newman’s best Sprint Cup finish at Talladega is third, which was earned in last year’s Aaron’s 499.
Jimmie Johnson will start first as the championship point leader. Joining him on the outside of row one is Matt Kenseth. Greg Biffle, Kevin Harvick and Jeff Gordon comprise the remainder of the top-five. Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Burton, Kurt Busch and Mark Martin round out the top-10.
With 45 drivers slated to qualify for the 43-car field, only Terry Cook and Aric Almirola failed to make the starting grid.
The Aaron’s 499 gets underway at 1 p.m. EDT on Sunday, April 25 with live coverage provided by FOX beginning with its pre-race show at noon.
