Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 39 U.S. Army Chevrolet Impala, led the two-car Stewart-Haas Racing(SHR) contingent in time trials at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn by qualifying eighth for Sunday’s Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. Newman turned a lap of 38.085 seconds at 189.051 mph on the 2-mile oval.

“We’re proud of what we did because we went out pretty late,” said Newman, who won at Michigan in August 2003 and June 2004.  “Going into the day we thought we had a good draw and it ended up being a not so good draw because of the rain. But it was a good run for the U.S. Army Chevrolet and it put us in the top 10 and we’ll go from there with it. We made some pretty decent changes from practice to qualifying and picked up almost a half a second with a hotter race track. So, I’m proud of the guys.”

Tony Stewart, driver of the No. 14 Old Spice/Office Depot Chevrolet Impala for SHR, qualified 17th with a time of 38.253 seconds at 188.221 mph.

“It was a decent lap for our Old Spice/Office Depot Chevrolet,” said Stewart, who won at Michigan in June 2000. “Hopefully the weather will cooperate tomorrow and we’ll get both practice sessions in. I know there’s a chance of rain and obviously we’d like to get the practice time to keep making our car better for Sunday.”

Kurt Busch captured his 12th career pole, his second of the season and his first in 19 Sprint Cup races at Michigan by posting a lap of 37.898 seconds at 189.984 mph.

Jamie McMurray will start alongside Busch on the outside of row one, as he timed in at 37.937 seconds at 189.788 mph. Jimmie Johnson (37.961 seconds at 189.668 mph) was third, while Kasey Kahne (37.970 seconds at 189.623 mph) and Jeff Burton (38.000 seconds at 189.474) rounded out the top-five.

Forty-six drivers attempted to qualify for the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips with Dave Blaney, Johnny Sauter and Michael Waltrip failing to make the 43-car field.

As far as manufacturers went, Dodge took the top spot via the pole run by Kurt Busch, while Chevrolet was next best at the hands of second-fastest McMurray. Ford was the third-fastest make thanks to Kahne’s fourth-place run. Denny Hamlin, who qualified seventh, was the top Toyota with a lap of 38.066 seconds at 189.145 mph.

The Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips gets underway at 1 p.m. EDT with live coverage provided by TNT beginning with its pre-race show at noon.
